Surviving Finals Week Without Burning Out

Finals week is one of the most stressful times of the semester. Many students respond by pulling all-nighters, skipping meals, and living on energy drinks. Those habits usually make studying harder, not easier.

Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is when your brain stores what you learned. Aim for 7 to 9 hours a night, even during exams. An all-nighter might feel productive, but it hurts memory and focus the next day.

Study in Focused Blocks

  • Study for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break to move, stretch, or get water.
  • Put your phone in another room while you study.
  • Start with the hardest subject when your energy is highest.

Know When to Ask for Help

Feeling some stress is normal, but if anxiety starts to feel overwhelming, reach out. USC Counseling and Psychiatry supports students, and you can call or text 988 anytime for crisis support. Talking to a friend, family member, or professor can also help more than you might expect.
